well in one breath it's "beware cheap hosting companies as they are cheap for a reason...." and in the next.
having only dealt with oneandone in the past and having breifly scouted around at 123-reg's prices and similar companies i still think it's reasonably priced. Have spoken to their helpline and you can downgrade your package after the 12 months... the only buggar is you are tied in for 24 months. Initially i thought it was just the standard 12 months. but i still think it's a good deal, and a "grabbit" as time sensitive.
glad i took the offer up.
If you initially thought it was just for 12 months then you thought it was costing you £1 instead of £218 - that is not a good deal.
And yes, cheap hosting companies in the UK leave a lot to be desired.0 -

would have still signed up.... you'd expect to pay the same monthly rate (more or less) with a comparable company for a similar product... but you get the first year free.
also a 60 money back guarantee if you arent happy with their service for any reason... and a free phone number where someone actually picks up the phone within a few minutes and speaks with an english accent (most unusual!!) beats the pants off that solar powered torch some gyppo flogged me last week!Hating Hastings Direct!0 -
I agree they do pick up the phone very quickly however they may have a English accent but they are all German, not that this makes any difference. Should point out in the title about the 24 months contract though.
As for good value, as I am sure your all aware it is not always who is cheapest, especially when the web is concerned. I actually have about 17 sites running on Strato and in the 2 years have never had any problems, bear in mind the sites get alot of hits.
As long as people are aware of the 24month contract I feel this is good value. Look at it like this.
£218 for 2 years including 10 domains with Strato
So break it down
£75 per year for the domains = £150 for the 2 years
hosting costs £68 for the 2 years = £2.83 per month :TThe only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.

Hi
I was about to sign up for the Powerweb package at £1 for the first year and 6.99 per month thereafter until I read this thread.
I asked their customer services a few questions ("What is the total cost for the 24 month period? What is the approximate cost in year 3? What are the cancellation terms during the first 24 months? And after the first 24 months? Who retains ownership of the domain name?"),
and here is their reply:
Thank you for your enquiry from 29.01.2008
I will endeavour to answer your enquiries in the order in which you have asked them:-
If you are referring to our Webhosting packages, which are now on offer at the moment, once you signed in for a package, you will have a 30 days Money Back Guarantee to try it out. If you do not cancel your order within the 30 days MBG period, you will commit yourself to a two year contract. The first year will cost you just €1 and the second year, you will be charged the normal price based on the package you have selected
Secondly, there is nothing in essence like an approximate cost. You will be billed when the appropriate billing period for the specific package you have selected commences
As regards your enquiry about the cancellation terms, you can cancel your package at any stage of your contract, in which case you will no longer be entitled to a refund. However you must give us four weeks notice to cancel your contract before it comes to an end, otherwise the contract will automatically be renewed for another year, if we do not receive any written notice from you. The rational here is to secure the domain names of our customers who would otherwise have forgotten to give such notice.
Finally, regarding your last enquiry, no soon a domain is connected in your name, you become so to say the legal owner of the domain. Not until you decide to relinguish ownership, will the domain be transferred to another person.
Any other issue, please feel free to contact us again.
With kind regards from Berlin

Does this help? I'm not sure now but at £1 followed by 12x 6.99 it is still cheaper than my current provider - just not clear if I can take the domain name with me without paying?
