Annual travel insurance - what if I cancel for the following year?

Here's something I'm confused about. I have annual travel insurance, for the calendar year 2024. I've booked a holiday for February 2025 (beyond the date of my insurance) but will have to pay the full balance in November (within the date). Suppose I have to cancel during 2024. Would the 2024 insurance cover that, even though the holiday isn't in 2024? If not, what should I do?

as i understand it… during this calendar year you are covered for cancellation… operator going bust etc. But that ceases when the policy expires. Your 2025 policy (if you buy one) would cover you for the first few months of 2025 - and the holiday itself.1
