advice on arriving at stansted airport midnight for 5am flight

Hi, does anyone know if its ok to arrive at Stansted at midnight for a 5am flight and just sit and read a book etc. I worry about getting up and getting there early as no trains and travelling on my own. I saw something about it closes for a few hours and don't want to be waiting outside!
Any advice and the same for Luton, Many thanks

It seems hardly likely that they completely close the airport and throw everyone out. I used to see youngsters dossing on the floor in out of the way spots...
    Evolution, not revolution
  • I think the thing about the airport closing for a few hours is old news.

    Fron Stansted's own FAQs:

"London Stansted Airport is open 24/7 however, we do not have facilities for passengers to sleep overnight in the terminal".

I don't think you'll have a problem reading a book or similar - just don't close your eyes!

You will just have to stay pre-security as that does close for a few hours still I believe.

Stansted have arrivals well into the early hours (1.50am was the latest timetabled arrival last night for example) and then check in desks will open from 3am, so always be people around.
  • Warning....The seats are incredibly uncomfortable.
  • Done this many times, Edinburgh, Malaga, De Gaul, Santiago de Compestella!

Find a quiet spot, nobody will bother you!

Not sure if it’s still going, but there used to be a website called “Sleeping at Airports” it was a guide for where best to sleep at different Airports around the world! They would rate how comfortable the seating was and what other facilities were still available!

The website still exists. Here's the link:

  • There isn't as much landside at Stansted as there used to be but there is a 24 hour Costa Coffee.

Thanks, all went well and would do again, rather than getting up at 2am and worrying about having everything together. Seats and benches quite hard, but good to go through security at 2am and abit quieter there!
