Cannot open word document sent to me

I do not have word installed on my laptop just Open Office. I am being sent word documents but cannot open them I keep getting diverted to Microsoft 365 asking me to pay for a subscription or enter a code. Is there anyway I can install just Word free or how can i open documents to read and print that are sent to me. Thank you for any assistance in solving my issue

OpenOffice has been forked a few times and you could have one of three different versions, but to open a file from inside OpenOffice or a variant, this might help:

OpenOffice will open Word documents so I suspect the problem is the you computer does not associate Word files with OpenOffice. 

To do this right click on one of the files you want to open and choose Properties. Choose the General tab on the window that opens, which should show you what the file opens with. Click on change to make the default OpenOffice Writer.

You should also be able to open the files directly within OpenOffice Writer or by right clicking the file and use Open With rather than just Open.

right click on one of the docx files and choose 'open with'

select OpenOffice and tick the box saying :always use this to open this type of file'
