Using a wireless laptop with a USB broadband modem to connect to internet

Hi Guys,
I have a wireless enabled laptop that works well with my (and my father-in-law's) wireless networks.
I am going to be visiting my parents next week for a fortnight.
In order to keep in touch with work (self employed) I am going to take my laptop. They have broad band but do not have a wireless network.
How do I connect and configure their USB modem to my laptop so that I can connect to the internet/emails?

What will I need? The driver files for the USB modem? Will I need the username and password details for my parents connection? Etc Etc. Can somebody please tell me everything I need so that I can get everything organised before I get there.

Hope somebody can help

regards
Max

  • Where is their pc in relationship to where your laptop is going to be? If it is in the same room, then does the PC have an network adaptor or a spare usb port. If it has a spare network port or USB port, then I would suggest that you set up an ad hoc network, using either a crossover cable for a wired connection or a usb wireless adaptor for a wireless connection.

Cost for either would be about £5 -£12
  • Is this "cross over cable" the same cable as an Ethernet cable - i.e. the cable I used to connect to my wireless router to when I set it up?
  • just need to have the modem drivers, their password (ie: mrsmith.btnet@bt) and your online, simple as that.
