Facebook uploads mystery

Ive a external hard drive, thousands of my photos on it, for some unkown reason FB now wont let me upload images off the external hard drive, it allows it off my PC drive, also off my phone, i had to transfer DSLR images via Nikon app to my phone to post on FB....

Now we all know how it felt to play in the band on the Titanic...

When a USB-attached device appears under 'This PC' with an icon rather than be mounted with drive letter like K:\, then the device is communicating using Media Transfer Protocol (MTP).
MTP generally doesn't allow drag and drop - most cameras use MTP which is why accessing photos is rather limited, other than copying them to local storage.
It would be unusual for an external hard drive to flip to MTP, but if there's USB media hubs etc. it could be misidentified. Open Device Manager and check how the drive is listed. If it’s under "Portable Devices" instead of "Disk Drives," something is not right.
