Gotta watch Barclaycard!

Options
I followed a link from Martin's email offering 0% for 14 months on balance transfers from Barclaycard and applied. Now that I've been accepted and a card supplied I've found that I've only been given 12 months. After calling Barclaycard they said I am in fact on a 13 month offer. Where did my extra month go? Customer services said they will put a note on my account and after the 13th month I should call back and they will refund the intrest charge made on the 14th month? Not good enough! I know what I applied for and expect to receive what was offered. I'm now awaiting a reply from the complaints department.

  • Platinum 0% limited period Balance transfer terms and conditions

14 month's interest free on credit card balances and three months on purchases... if that's tempted you to go platinum, here's the small print:
    1. You can transfer between £250 and £5,000 or 90% of your credit limit, whichever is lower. This is subject to the available credit on your account.
    2. We reserve the right to refuse a credit card balance transfer or to limit the amount you can transfer. If we do allow you to transfer an amount over £5,000, the excess will be debited to your account and charged at 6.9% interest per annum until paid in full. We will not charge a handling fee on the excess.
    3. A 2.5% handling fee will apply to each 0% interest balance transfer you make.
    4. We can't accept transfers from cards or loans issued by companies within the Barclays Group. If you choose to close your account with other lenders, please let them know in writing.
    5. You should continue to make payments to your other lenders until the balance has been confirmed.
    6. Your monthly payments will reduce your promotional balances first (promotional balance transfers will be repaid before promotional purchases). This means that you will be charged interest on other balances and new spending whilst your promotional balances are being paid off. Obviously the more you pay back, the quicker your balances will be paid off.
    7. If you do not make at least the minimum payment by the payment due date each month or if you exceed your credit limit at any time we will remove the promotional rate from any promotional balance and charge at your standard rate instead (typical rate 14.9% APR variable).
    8. This credit card balance transfer offer is only available when you apply online using this application form. To qualify for this balance transfer offer you must transfer any balance within 60 days of opening your Barclaycard account.

Barclays call centre is dreadful, I phoned with a fairly standard query about my card and was shouted at for interrupting.
Apparently the pause when she stopped talking was not because she had finished speaking  . I was ordered to allow her to speak.

Like you, I was also instructed to call back later - it is a great way of getting rid of people!

  • Got a phone call from customer complaints this morning. After calmly explaining my gripe he agrees with me. I should be offered what I applied for. I have now been offered the full 14 months!

  • They can't make their mind up about anything, they are incompetent. 3 months ago I got a letter saying they were reducing my credit limit and withdrawing my cash advance facility. All the statements since that letter have shown my full credit limit, unchanged but the cash advance facility at £0. Got a statement today and the cash advance facility is back at 50% of the overall credit limit which it always has been.

There are no messages on the statement regarding these changes, they've just done it with no warning.

I've never seen such shoddy behaviour from a financial institution.

I certainly would not consider them if I was just signing up for a credit card. It appears they don't know what their doing. My guessing is though that they have finally decided to look after their existing customer base rather than abuse them in light of the financial turmoil that looks set to hit us next year.

Any customer that you have had a relationship for several years has to be better than one with a customer you've never had one with, it appears that Barclaycard might only just be realising this.
  • Hmmm. I was just wondering what the collective noun for a group of bankers would be. Could it be a 'toss of bankers'? Any better suggestions?
