Credit Card Interest

Options

Hi, can anyone offer any explanation why I get charged interest on my Halifax Clarity Credit Card even though I have got a direct debit set up to pay off the full balance every month?

Have you made any cash withdrawls, or bought anything that could be considered as a cash purchase?

You asked the same question in 2020.............
  • Yes I made some cash withdrawels in Greece last month. Some of the interest in other months has been when this wasn't the case.

That'll be why. I'm sure I read somewhere that Halifax Clarity now charges interest on cash withdrawals abroad when it didn't previously. I expect you'll have been notified by a letter, if you have online or app banking there'll be a copy of it in there

They've always charged interest on cash withdrawals, but previously it was easier to pay off the cash withdrawal early.

OP - you'll see this comes up a lot if you search. I  use my Clarity for cash withdrawals, and Chase debit card for purchases at 1% cashback, while abroad. I pay off my cash withdrawal pretty much as soon as it appears on my account, and generally only have a few pence in interest.

Others will argue that you shouldn't use Clarity at all for cash. I want to keep them going, as other cards have blown hot and cold on use abroad, but Clarity has been consistent for years. They recently gave me a credit limit increase, so they must be happy with me, despite relatively low usage.
