Sat nav query

Hi my daughter recently bought used seat ibiza 2016. Sat nav sd card only installed after collection, but current location is always 5 to 10 miles away. We've tried resetting, and driving to see if it re routes but it doesn't recognise from anywhere. So as we have warranty they said we can take it in but have said they don't have a clue either. Seat website not much help as only offer from 2019 over. I think its more car gps signal than issue with sd cars but who would know? What would second hand car place do if they have no clue?
It's 3 month warranty, so I'd rather advise them instead of them kerouac car and my daughter has no car?

There's a known problem with the OCU (Online Control Unit) within the car.
This is it's communication unit to the outside world.

It'll handle Over The Air (OTA) updates via GSM networks and also processes the GPS signal.
It'll use GSM and GPS to locate your car more accurately than just using one type of signal, hence why it's skewiff, one part is letting the side down.

It is usually under the seat in a flap in the carpet.

SEAT and VAG in general have been a bit coy about some of their inherent problems and it can take a bit of persistence to get them to take notice of them.

They have launched various software updates over the years to fix some issues, but rather unsurprisingly the car can't access them as the OCU isn't working!

If your car is outside of warranty then it's could be to be an expensive fix but it would be a good idea to check ALL the fuses first and if you can access it, have a look at the unit. It's fitted in a prone position, if the car has suffered water ingress it tends to get wet.

There are ECU repair companies that can check it and might be able to repair it, but it might just be less hassle to connect a smart phone via Carplay or Android Auto and use Google Maps or Waze. That's generally free.

    Could be GPS antenna.

    Does warranty actually cover this?

TBH, if car has AA or ACP I would use them instead. As Seat do not offer navigation updates on 2016 cars.

The Bosch LCN in my car did this once, and after posting on various forums, someone suggested I check the time zone setting in the setup menu and put it back to London.

I've no idea how it got changed, but it was set to the wrong time zone- I have an idea it thought it was in Paris.

Anyway, setting the time zone to London fixed it!

I have no idea why it would have made a difference to the position calculation, but it did.

TBH using google maps/waze is better anyway as the satnav is likely to be years out of date on roads etc, plus the live updates give traffic updates, reroute you to avoid delays etc - far better than an old map and relying on the waste of money travel reporters on the radio

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

When mine was set to Paris time, the calculated position was out by several miles, it didn't think it was in France.

The calculated position was "correct" as calling up the satellite info it had enough satellites for a 3D fix, and was showing a position & altitude that corresponded to where it thought it was (I checked the co-ordinates in Google earth)

Like I said, I have absolutely no idea how it can calculate the position wrong when it could see more than 4 satellites, the time zone is irrelevant, but it did.

The other thing it does is dead reckoning using the car's accelerometers and the speedo pulse when it can't see enough satellites (usually in sunny weather- I think it is a temperature problem with the unit, cleverly mounted at the top of the dash....), the satellite info shows -------- -------- for the co-ordinates. After a couple of Summer days the error builds up and it shows a position upto a mile from where it is.
