Geneva airport Swiss / French sector car hire question

Morning all,
going skiing to France as I have for the last couple of years and am currently pricing up car hire for the week.
The last 3 years I have hired the car in the Swiss sector for ease of use, as, compared to the one time roughly 7 years ago when I hired in the French sector it was a lot of fuss.

Mainly:
additional passport control when entering the French sector
very poor access to the motorway I needed to get on to be able to head to the alps (lake Anne y direction).
I remember I was stuck on B roads for at least 2 hours with little access to the French motorway network.
question: anybody hired a car at Geneva airport, French sector and started the journey with access to motorway A1 / A41?
Is this now less of a fuss than in the past?
I am aware of road tax and the implications, so the question is really can it be done and how much delay is it compared to arriving on Swiss side, turn left and join the motorway after 5 minutes.
any feedback appreciated
thanks

One way or another you’re going to have to queue to cross the border - whether you do it in the car (and queues will then depend on time of day) or in the airport. With my limited experience (I normally do the Swiss side along to Lausanne area) if I’m going into France I’ll hire on French side - there’s also less risk on returning of having to cross into Switzerland to return the car0
