clothes for old man

I have a 90+ year old relative who is VERY set in his ways with what he will wear.  Over the past few years he has lost weight (nothing to be concerned about) and is now looking like a scarecrow wearing his old, now very threadbare and too big clothes.

My problem is that he will only wear beige, thickness and texture of fabric is also an issue and he is not in any way open to anything more modern than what he has been wearing for the past 20+ years.

Can anyone suggest where I can start to find:
beige / fawn / wheat / biscuit coloured formal trousers in a polyester / nylon material?  Straight leg, no turn ups.
shirts in the same colour range, single pocket, not button down collar, short or long sleeved in a polyester / polycotton mix?

I've been searching the internet all day and either I'm destined to fail this challenge or I have not hit on the right search terms!

  • Searching Amazon for polyester men’s trousers then filtering for beige brings up a few contenders.

Unsure about the trousers but you will get tops at m&s. I was pointing out tops like that to my hubby who commented hes not that old!

Other option is tj hughes if you have one near, not many tj stores left now.

    Peacocks maybe
  • Vinted can sometimes be good for replacing specific items in a different size but not sure how much there is in an older demographic. There does tend to be plenty of M&S, including vintage. Searchable by colour but sellers can be inconsistent in whether they list the fabric.

Don't know where you are but maybe a traditional men's outfitter? There do seem to be some remaining on some high streets, or at least there were before the pandemic.

Had this issue with FiL before he popped off a few years back.  He went from being a very well dressed man wearing suits and ties at work, to well dressed suits and ties to go to Tesco once retired and then started to slide a bit down hill.

As he lost weight and had problems with, um, various stuff, having wool trousers to be dry cleaned was no longer an option. OH talked him into trying things from Cotton Traders - and they still have a plethora of beige in a wide variety of styles.  Also - most of it is stuff of the easy wash variety which is handy.  AND there's a lot of elasticated waists or those hidden waist tightening button type things that made adapting to a leaner figure a doddle.  Oh and they come in different lengths so that's handy too.

Prices are pretty good too.  Returns are easy as well though it does cost if you don't have a store nearby.

eventually FiL even went all the way to having pull on trousers with elasticated waists, basically one step up from sweat pants.

    Shirts are quite good too.

  • I'd have thought a charity shop may be a good idea, I'd imagine lots of donations come from people of a similar age no longer with us. I'd speak to the manager of a charity shop as its possible not all the donations make it to the shop floor as deemed nor sale worthy.

Damart, maybe? Our local M&S had a ‘classic’ section for ladies. I’m no certain if there is a men’s equivalent. Worth an ask?

It's not often people specifically look for Polyester as it is a synthetic fabric often used to keep costs low, but it is fortunate for you as Polyester is by far the easiest material to find - most clothes are made out of it nowadays.

To be honest from your remit - just go on M&S's website or to one of their stores that sells clothes, there will be shed loads of items that fit the bill.

Chums on line  offer all you require as regards traditional older mens clothing. Once you have signed up they frequently have sales and offers. They also offer womens and homewear again in traditional styles.

thanks to all replies.  I've managed to find some trousers, still looking for shirts.  I didn't think of Amazon and was so focussed on style and colour I hadn't searched for "polyester"!
