insurance claim or self repair

If we decide to self repair after a collision where fault is likely to be disputed, can this be taken as accepting liability?
our excess is £1500 and our go-to excellent repairer will do it very quickly and for little more than this amount. We have notified our insurers because another vehicle was involved, but not yet claimed. The other vehicle is a DPD van with much less damage than ours (scratch down the side)
If we just want it done quickly by someone we trust for the same amount of our excess is this tantamount to accepting liability if DPD then claim against us, or can our insurance company still argue the case.

If you decide to claim or not is irrelevant to liability.
