Hi, I'm trying to switch to a fixed dual-fuel but those which seem the best require a smart meter. My flat is old and it would not be possible to install a smart gas meter. Thanks

Have you a question? Why would it be not possible to install a smart gas meter?

If that is the case then you cannot have a smart meter tariff. However might be worth getting someone to try.

What is the exact issue withheld gas meter position? You could have it moved.

Many fixed tariffs require that you agree to have a smart meter fitted. Just do that. If/when they find out they can't install a smart meter, they will leave you on the same tariff with manual readings.

You'd be surprised where it's possible to install smart meters! What is leading you to believe that it's not possible - have you had an attempted installation and been told it couldn't be done? Generally speaking these days installers will give a bit more detail - not least as they are as aware as the rest of us that not far down the line smart meters are the only option available (in real terms, we're pretty much there already) and so it's more logical to say "I can't install this right now because of A & B - so if you get work done to change those, then you should be able to re-request an appointment and get the meter replaced without any problems".

    Thank you all.

I'll try and call an Octopus contractor again. Sometimes, if a different one comes they might be able to find a different  solution.

Nevertheless, if you have a smart meter for gas, you also need one for electricity. The Octopus contractors found out there were problems with installing the electricity smart meter too. They reported to Octopus who should have contacted the ukpowernetwork. I didn't hear from neither of them. Chased several time Octopus and directly with ukpowernetwork. No luck yet.

    It's a headache.

That's … not a fixed tariff then *confused*

Btw a lot of the fixed tariff offerings only require you to agree to have one installed.  Which you can do.  It's then up to the supplier to offer appointments and the installer whether it actually gets done.

Often the T&Cs are that if you don't let them install smart meters, they can kick you off onto the standard variable, but that's not applicable here.
Some might say if for any reason they can't be installed, you'll have to leave the tariff, it just depends on the exact T&Cs of the tariffs you're looking at.

Sorry Sparkymark70, maybe it's a good solution for now.
