Mortgage problem

Hi everyone I have been advised to join here and ask for some advice on the matter.
So since 2016 we have been trying to get a payment refunded back from our mortgage company.but each company have been dragging on and on.and two weeks ago I managed to find a email address for the CEO of the mortgage company.witch.i wrote a email and said that we want a response within 7 working days.well we received the response but wasn't expecting what we were going to be told.
So below is the email from the mortgage company and really appreciate it if someone can help us with what next week have to do.we look forward hearing from you all.at the moment we have removed the mortgage company names from the email until we know the next steps forward.
Dear Mr & Mrs
May I take the opportunity to first of all, thank you for your patience while I've investigated this matter. I understand that you've reached out to us on numerous occasions in recent times without the assistance you should have been provided with, and for that I am truly sorry.
From my reviews, I've established that you originally had an account with xxxxxx In April 2016 xxxxxx made the commercial decision to Write Off the outstanding balance on the account 419 in your name.
Following the write off, the secured Legal Charge on the associated property was also removed from the Land Registry records and the outstanding balance on the account was cleared. From this point, the balance would have been zero and no Legal Charge held.
Later in 2016 db transferred a number of their live accounts to xxxxxc. Your account was not included in the population of accounts transferred to xxxxxx as the balance had already been written off.
I understand a letter sent in 2021 has caused some confusion as to whether there was a balance on an xxxxxx account, but In line with the above, I can confirm that this account was not part of this transfer to xxxxx
May I also take the opportunity to clarify that that Elderbridge has never sold your account on to any third party.
Please take this correspondence as Confirmation that xxxxx are not pursuing you for any outstanding balance on this account.
We would recommend providing a copy of this Correspondence to xxxxxxx or any other company whom you believe are pursuing you for a debt.
I am hopeful that this clarifies that you do not hold an Account with xxxxxxx in relation to this Specific loan referenced. Should you require any further assistance I will be back in the office on Monday 2nd September. In my absence, I have copied in xxxxxxx the head of xxxxxxx should any further issues arise whilst I am on leave.
Kind regards

so to clarify - you have an overpayment that you want a refund of, and they think that you are being chased for underpayment/debt?0

We have no idea as to what you are pursuing. Seems the mortgage company from the response doesn't either.1

Don't worry with it I honestly don't think you all can help with this matter.0

You mention "Each Company" which is strange, as you would only have one mortgage company, unless you have further borrowing via a different company.
So you would still only be chasing the co that you overpaid.
So there are some crossed wires somewhere, As overpayment & write off/charge do not go together 🤷♀️
Perhaps post the details on what exactly is the issue here?Life in the slow lane0
