A new chair for working from home

I've been a bit lax on my choice of chairs I use when I'm on my laptop for work or desktop for pleasure.

I spend a lot of time WFH so would like to buy a more ergonomic chair that will support me a lot more.

Budget around £150 max & would like it pre assembled.

Probably need to try them in-store rather than buy blind online.

I'm 6ft 1 & quite plump!! & Have the laptop, monitor, keyboard on the desk.

    Are you employed?

If so and you work from home your first port of call should be on your employer, who have a duty of care towards you.

They should carry out a workplace risk assessment and provide whatever equipment is needed by the assessment to ensure your health and safety while at work. That is the best MSE route, especially as most employers will be quite OK with you using their equipment for your recreational activities as well.

Only if working from home is part of your contract and not a choice that the employer allows you to make.

My husband has this chair from IKEA, he's a bit taller than you... It does require a little self assembly but is bang on your budget at £150. I expect IKEA will have them to try in-store. It comes in dark grey/black or light grey.

I have a Pago chair, which I'd also recommend - but it's twice your budget. Amazon offer assembly for an extra fee.

Do you have a Back 2 you shop near you? They will help you find a good chair, but probably not at your budget size.

It's worth looking at secondhand chairs from companies that buy them in bulk from corporate offices who are closing / relocating / refurbishing.

I bought mine on eBay for about £150 and it's a make and model that would have cost much more when new.

That way, you get an office-quality chair for a fraction of the price.

I bought from Preloved. Someone didn't need it anymore.

As Unforeseen said, WFH is not a specific element of my contract.

I've got an IKEA nearby so might have a look on their website beforehand.

And 2nd hand is an option I didn't think of. Always up 4 saving some of my hard-earned wage!!

Be sure to seek out what the chairs are weight tested to/what the recommend limit is if you're above about 100kg/16 stone - the Ikea one mentioned is tested to 110kg, for example.

From my experience, they're unlikely to instantly crumple beneath you, but wear out much faster (especially things like the gas lift) so it can be a false economy to not spend more for something built for bigger people in the first place.

Husband bought his chair from Staples. Wide variety of styles and prices.
  • You can get a better quality chair for your budget by going for a refurbished one, check out The Office Crowd for starters. (I cannot post a link yet).
