UC is calculated at the end of the (monthly - runs for one calendar month from the date you claim) assessment period based on what income you've received. So there would be nothing to pay back. If there's no entitlement because of your wages at the end of the second assessment period, you just wouldn't get a payment for it.ooitsme said:Spoonie_Turtle said:
Just to add on to this, OP if there is entitlement to UC (put your details into the calculator as if you've already finished the course) you should claim the day after your course finishes. UC only takes wages into account once you've received them so you can keep claiming until your received earrings reduce it to nil.poppy12345 said:
If not then the only other benefit would be Universal Credit, which is means tested. If you live with a partner you'll need to claim as a couple. If payment will be just under 5 weeks after you submit your claim.
… A benefits calculator will tell you if there's any entitlement to UC. https://www.entitledto.co.uk/benefits-calculator/
(Whereas JSA I believe you would have to close your claim once you've started your job if it's 16hrs or more per week.)Spoonie_Turtle said:poppy12345 said:

So, according to the calculator I should be entitled to some UC. I have a couple of questions though. My job will start during the 4 week “assessment period” (claim 2nd Sept, job start 16th Sept, paid 28th Oct). So I’ll be in work for 7 weeks or so - will I therefore not qualify or if I understand it right what has been said above that I would continue getting UC until I actually get paid would I then need to pay it back? And would I need to attend any appointments during this period when I’ll be in work?My apologies I’m not knowledgeable about these things, I’m really grateful for the replies! If I’ve messed the quote up here and replied to the wrong person sorry!)

I don't know about appointments - in theory the system will probably say you have to (and you'll definitely have to attend initial appointments to verify your identity and accept commitments) but the work coach assigned to you should take into account your circumstances for arranging them, i.e. the fact you'll be working and won't be able to attend in person during the times/days you're working.1 -
Couple of questions - for my info really
JSA - as a student nurse would that have paid NI (when I trained in 92-95 we were paid and so paid NI). Unless OP had another job where would the NI contributions come from?
UC - for correction by someone who s knows more than me. You cant claim UC as a student (in this case potentially funded through student finance and bursary). So first opportunity to stat claim will be the day after the course finishes, which will pay out a month + 5/7 days later. By which point OP will be in FT employment. However isn’t there an overlap period just in case?Proud to have dealt with our debtsStarting debt 2005 £65.7K.

Correct, but as they don't get paid until the end of October, there'll be no wages in the first month of claiming and therefore a month's UC payable. (There may of course be none thereafter if monthly wages wipe out UC.)peteuk said:
