But it isn't law, and it's not a British Standard.

But just make sure your insurer will pay out if you go against the guidance.

I haven't actually heard of any home storage batteries going up in smoke?
It isn't the risk of the batteries, themselves, causing the fire. That risk is pretty minimal with LFP chemistry. The problem is that a fire from any cause could weaken the roof structure and having a quarter of a tonne of batteries up there could put firefighters, and others, at risk.

Personally, I think that risk could be mitigated if there was a requirement to mechanically fix the batteries to a masonry structure such as the chimney or gabble walls.

The problem with PAS 63100:2024 is that overnight we've gone from sticking batteries wherever it's convenient - usually in the loft if they are linked to solar power - to a long list of restrictions where you mustn't place them.  If you live in a small terraced house, your only option under PAS 63100 might be to build a brick outhouse in the garden.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

There are quite a number of batteries that are IP65 rated.

I'll believe it when I see it.  Do you have any pictures of solar panel batteries mounted outside and exposed the the rain?

Seriously?  Loads of installs are outside, many including the inverter too. Google something like pv or solar batteries installed outside for loads of pics.

    Here are my ickle batts.

Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

For general PV advice please see the PV FAQ thread on the Green & Ethical Board.

But those don't comply with PAS 63100 either.  Too near to a window.

Thank you, @Martyn1981.  Aren't they also rather close to that downpipe and water butt?

Is that two batteries at 10 kWh each?  How much would they cost today?
