Lost DVD and CD-rom drives

Very recently noticed that both drives no longer appear to be on the computer - although they do show up when windows loading up. Have no idea how long have had this problem, as not needed to use either for ages, last back up on cd was about a month ago, so was fine then. Possibly was two weeks ago when I disconnected to clean noisy fan, which was a tad on the murky side. Have checked all leads and everything is back in place again.
Am using Win98SE, drives are Sony CD-RW CRX140E and Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1402. As luck would have it, drivers for both are on cd, not on floppy, if that is the problem. Can't believe that both drives would break down at the same time, have obviously done something wrong, but no idea what.
Any help greatfully appreciated..........please?

The best thing to do would be to try re-installing the drivers, the easiest way would be to download them by searching for the drives in google adding drivers after (ie Sony CD-RW CRX140E drivers).
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.

Thanks Mattjimf. Did a search on Sony and Toshiba sites for drivers with no luck - never thought of doing a general search! Duh!
Will try that later today, as no idea to be mucking about and breaking things at this time of the morning, especially after a couple of glasses of shiraz!

Hi Anne_Marie.I also had this problem once perhaps you could try what I did.

Go to C drive and right click and click on properties when this comes up (System Properties) click on hardware, when this opens click on Device Manager then look down the column and double click on disk drives or if it says DVD/CD Rom Drives right click on each that are not showing for you and click on uninstall, then restart your computer and it should find the new hardware again, and hopefully Bobs your uncle again.icon10.gif

It worked for me so Good Luck.icon7.gif

Just to add, there is a section that says just above the uninstall bit, update drivers you could try this also.( this is in the Device Manager bit that I told you about in the above post)icon12.gif

    Again Good Luck Anne_Marie.

Thank you Pat - did try the update drivers thing as you have suggested, but not had the bravado to uninstall. Sorry, should really have put down all I already tried in original post.
Should I try uninstall first, or try to update drivers? I do have "D" drive showing, but device not working properly, but don't have "E" drive showing at all - bearing in mind that have cd-rw and seperate dvd rom - and goodness knows which is which!
Still leaving things for much later in the day! Bed beckoning!

i would try the uninstall first, as windows will load the generic drivers for the drives, if it still doesn't work i would try the update drivers. If you are having problems with finding the drivers needed, try https://www.driverguide.com it's free to join and has pretty much every driver possible.
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.
