Break from driving - keeping no claims bonus

I had 20 years no claims bonus when I got my car insured last October.

I am planning on getting rid of my car and not buying another just yet.

If I was to end my insurance policy now does that mean that my insurer would give me proof of no claims bonus of 20 years from the date I end my policy, and that should remain valid for up until around August 2026?

NCB "lives" for two years between policies. After that, it's not generally accepted by insurers. So, yes, if your current policy ends today, it'll be recognised up until late August 2026. After that, no.

Also, no insurer will view you as having twenty years. They'll view you as having their maximum - which tends to vary between about five and nine.

I've just been through this with a relative. Car was disposed of, she called to cancel her policy, asked them for proof of no-claims, and they emailed it to her within a few minutes.

Most insurers will accept NCD that is up to 2 years old, Admiral currently accept up to 3 years old. Who may accept 3 years in September 2026 is inevitably something you'd need to check at the time.
