LGPS: Marry After Retirement - Spouse Benefits

Options
I retired after 30 years in LG in 2011 (joined in 1981). After retirement I got married (previously never been married). Upon my death will my wife be entitled to the same/similar rights to the spouse of any scheme member who marries while contributing to the scheme?
Thanks in advance.

This is the sort of thing that will be covered in the scheme rules - you are best checking with the administrators and if they say your spouse will be covered get it in writing.  Not that I'm saying admins make mistakes but.....

    And congrats!

but I would check what they will actually get because I think your 30 years covers 3 or 4 sets of scheme rules.

Widow's benefits in respect of a post retirement marriage are only based on service from 6 April 1978 onwards.

So, as you joined after that,  your widow (should you pre-decease her) will receive full widow's benefits for the rest of her life.

Just in case this question is of interest to anyone else..... post retirement widower's benefits are only based on service from 6 April 1988, unless the member paid extra contributions to top up the widower's pension to full service.  Didn't happen very often, at least in the LGPS, due to the cost.
