BG Homecare excess charge reclaim

I had in issue with my radiators not heating up, booked an engineer through Homecare to fix the issue and was told it was my thermostat that wasn't connecting to the boiler and couldn't be fixed ( either due to how old my boiler was or how old the thermostat was, can't recall exactly). The only solution gave to me was to install the hive thermostat mini for just under £140, which given the choice between heating or no heating I was fine paying.
The engineer sent a link through email for me to pay for the hive while he was working on it and I did so. However once the job was done and the email summary for the job came through and I noticed I was still charged the excess amount of £99. I had assumed since my thermostat couldn't be repaired, this wouldn't apply as I was paying separately for the hive.
So the total cost came to around £240 ( not to mention £20 every month for homecare), yet when I looked up the hive online they have an offer to install exactly what I had done for £109, exclusively for British gas customers.
When calling up British gas to see if there had been a mistake and I should have been charged either one or the other ( the excess or the installation), I was told the excess applied as to account for the installation. So that would therefore mean I've paid £140 for the thermostat, which is currently £79 full price on the hive website right now and on sale for even less.
Does this sound right to anyone??
I have managed to get in contact with hive to uninstall the thermostat and get my £140 back.
However my main question is do I have any course of action to reclaim the excess amount I paid??
