HDMI compatability problem

Our TV is via a Virgin box.  I am trying to bring back into use a very old (20 years) 14" Evotel model ELED16L5ND. to put right beside my wife's chair as failing  sight means she can no longer see the main screen.

When I move the HDMI cable from the main TV to the Evotel there is no picture.  Has there been some changes in the HDMI settings or other technical details that means I am wasting my time or is there anything else that I can try?

I think it depends on what backward compatible the cable is or the output from the Virgin box

Nothing specific in that the modern device should be able to send a compatible signal, but if the signal defaults to 4k for example then that might cause the issue. On the Virgin box can you set it to 1080p, 1080i or even 720p? You might also need to turn HDR off as well.

The problem is most likely that the Virgin box is set to output a signal that is incompatible with the old TV.  Most likely the output resolution from the Virgin box needs to be reduced.

Being 20 years old then it’s likely to have the original version of HDMI. There have been changes to copy protection since then. Before version 1.4 a device didn’t need to stick to copy protection. (Eg output the picture on a SCART socket so it can be recorded) So it’s unlikely your TV will work with copy protected sources like Virgin. 

I don’t know if the Virgin box has any analogue outputs? (I doubt it) you should be able to use those.
