Advice on Council tax discount? Household members receiving Attendance allowance & Carers allowance

Seeking some advice please.

There are 6 members, myself included, living in a property that we moved into in 2022.

- My partner and I purchased the property through a mortgage, making us responsible for paying the Council tax. We both work full time.
- We have 2 kids aged 5 and 9 whom we care for.
- Additionally, our parents live with us - my mother is over 75 and receives Attendance allowance, while my father, also over 75, receives Carers allowance.

I recently came across an article on Money Saving Expert (MSE) that warned about households potentially missing out on a £20,000 payout
.

I am wondering if having household members claiming Attendance allowance and Carers allowance entitles us to a discount on our Council tax. Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It will depend on your local council and the rules that they have implemented for their Council Tax Reduction Scheme.

You could try using the benefit calculator at EntitledTo.co.uk. This should confirm if you are eligible for any help with your council tax.

No.  If it was just your parents it might be (but I doubt it unless they are also on very low income) but with you, your OH and the kids it's the full whack that needs to be paid.

I'd be interested to know what article it is to which you are referring.
