Gas strut for Ottoman bed has fallen off, won't go back on

Hello,

I saw a similar post to this on this forum so thought someone might help.
One of the two gas struts for my Ottoman bed has fallen off (and the two nuts that attach it) and it won't go back on. As odd as it sounds, it seems to have become slightly too long for the space it is meant to go in.

My landlord suggested WD40 to compress it, but I'm not sure if that's wise.

I would really appreciate if anyone can help, as I'm a DIY- dummy.
I don't think I can attach photos as I've only just registered so it's not allowed in case it's spam.

Thanks again.

  • It's a piston.  Quite plausible that at full extension it's 'too long for the space'.

If you imagine how big that space will be when the bed is closed, it'll be much smaller than it is when the bed is open.

Hopefully the overextension hasn't damaged the seals so you should be able to compress it to the correct length to reattach it.

Sounds like a two person job.

If you press down hard on the piston, can you compress it? If so, do so with a cord wrapped around it, tying it off when shortened. Or, make the cord into a tied loop first, and slip.it over the end when compressed enough. Hopefully the nut holes will still be accessible?

  • Thanks for the help, ThisIsWeird, I will try that.
