CPAs for one-off purchases

Options
These CPAs are a new problem that I’ve just encountered
I tried to respond to a Facebook advert to buy some shoes. The company pretended to be Sports Direct but wasn’t at all.The shoes never turned up! And my bank have refunded the £37 I paid while they investigate. But more worryingly a recurring payment had been set up without me being aware. Although I have cancelled it with the bank, apparently it can be quite easy for them to get around.
How can this be legal?

You've probably agreed to a recurring "membership" or something in the terms and conditions that you didn't read.

Can't believe anyone buys stuff through a Facebook advert and expect not to get scammed

Sounds like it would be worth educating yourself on them:

Continuous payment authority: manage recurring payments - MSE (moneysavingexpert.com)

Having said that, what do you mean by "apparently it can be quite easy for them to get around"?

    How did you originally pay?

CPA - Continuous Payment Authority - is the terminology used for a recurring transaction from a credit card. If its from a current account (or its associated debit card) it would be a Direct Debit or a Standing Order which was set up.

CPA can be disputed with the credit card issuer. DD can be clawed back using the Direct Debit Guarantee. A standing order can only be set up by the account holder.

That's not correct, a CPA is set up from either a credit card or debit card. If you set a recurring payment using debit card details rather than account details that's also a CPA, not a direct debit.
