Jumping mouse

Options

My wireless mouse is jumping about as I try to write something and/or opens other sites on my bottom bar. The problem is worste when I try to write on line but also occurs when I write on Word. I think the problem is faulty touch pad (I cannot use this because I wear gloves due to severe hand eczema).

I have tried to disable the pad but cannot find how to do this on my Windows 7 pc. New mice, a wired mouse and covering the touch pad have all made no difference.

Please note that I tried Windows 10 but hated its intrusiveness: after an excessively long update I found that it had reversed all my settings!

On most laptops you press FN and a number to turn off the touchpad.
  • It should be in control panel
Device Manager>Mice and Other Pointing Devices. Right click Trackpad, select disable.

  • I tried the FN solution to no avail. This solution revealed no Trackpad link as shown below.

That's a PS/2 port, very old school. and there is should be a trackpad listed.
It's possible that somehow the trackpad is being wrongly assigned.  If you haven't anything plugged into that PS/2 port then I would disabled it.

You could also try finding the drivers for the TP

You’ve mentioned PC rather than laptop, so a touchpad is likely to either be built into a keyboard or a separate device that mimics a mouse.

If it was separate I’m sure you would have unplugged it. So it’s likely built into your keyboard. Did the keyboard come with software?

If you are actually using a laptop please can you let us know the make and model.
  • Thank you PHK for pointing this out.  It is a laptop (Sorry - was born before the flood!)  The good news is that, following advice from Hill Street Blues, I think I may have sorted it by means of a driver update from Dell.  Uninstalling the PS2 did not work because, after reboot, it reinstalled again.  However, I have had a new problem while writing this = has twice scrolled to the top i.e to my thread and it is hard to get it down again.

Have tried to uninstall the Touchpad but it reinstalled again!
  • After hours of trial and error I have finally got it sorted = have worked out how to disable the touchpad = via mouse settings. Thank you SO MUCH. I would not have got there without all your help, especially that from Hill Street Blues.
