From the outset, I wont be naming the company in question, nor quoting the exact amounts or miles below.

In September 2023 I used a comparison site to buy car insurance and I made it VERY CLEAR on the drop downs that it was a lease car.  I ended up buying with Company X for, lets say £500.

A few days ago I have had my renewal quote through with them and its barely changed, lets say £505, happy enough to carry on with them as it is in the same ballpark as the other low quotes on the comparson sites, however it said my annual milage is (eg) 10000. I do less than this now (maybe 8000) and I saw in the online portal I could change it and get the quote revised.

So on I go to change it. However I notice in other drop downdowns it says that MYSELF is the registered keeper and the owner, and doesnt let me change this to the "someone else" option.

So I have a few questions.

1) Have I been driving around for 11 months with invalid insurance, or is it only invalid if I claim?
2) If I ring this company up and tell them that this information is now wrong, am I at risk of them cancelling it, something I would have to declare?
3) Would the best thing to do is stay quiet about it and just move elsewhere next month, and hope I dont have to claim in the meantime?

And yes, before someone says it, yes yes yes I should have checked the documetation when it was originally sent a year ago!

    1) "Valid" would depend on your definition... your policy is in force, you won't be stopped by the police for having no insurance however were you to make a claim or your insurer decided to do some checks they would spot the problem. What happens after that depends on a) how they believe the issue has come about and potentially b) what they'd have done if they had known it was a lease.

If they believe you have recklessly or intentionally made a false declaration then they can void the policy which effectively means you were never insured by them so in principle were the police or such to do a retrospective check you'd be in a grey area at least but its a bit of a moot point as police dont do retrospective checks unless its something like a late accusation of you being in a hit and run.

    2) It would come down to if they insure lease cars... most do these days but not all

    3) You know what the right thing to do is and I knew of someone who was repaying £75,000 because they didnt do the right thing and had an accident.
