Address mix up by British Gas

When some flats were built on the same street as mine they were given a similar address to mine. The only difference looked like a house name so the address had to be changed. Nearly 10 years later and British Gas still have the old adresss on their system and refuse to communicate with me because I am not their customer.

Address maintenance said they have updated the address but 2 months on energy comparison sites are still showing mixtures of the two addresses.

Has anyone else experienced issues like this and if so how did you get it sorted.

I had a very similar issue.  Occupants of a new build down the street adopted my house number and postcode. I found out when one of my utilities accounts was ceased. I had to take action to sort it which involved contacting royal mail. They were very helpful and issued the new builds a new postcode which I told the new occupant's about. I presume they used that then going forward.

This was some years ago. I recall it took more than a year maybe longer for the erroneous entries to disappear in drop down lists for shopping, utilities etc against my postcode. Presumably some companies don't re read the PAF very often.

  • Thank you very much for your reply. I already got the addresses changed about 10 years ago. I've now contacted the energy ombudsman who said I need to contact them again when 8 weeks have passed if it is not sorted. It's the councils that are not creating unique addresses so I am going to put a complaint into them as well. Glad you managed to get yours sorted but we should not have to experience this stress.

My granddaughter's address was different on the council tax register to the RM list.  The energy supply database used a mixture for the block of flats, hers being the council tax one but her energy supplier used the RM one.  Have you checked the energy supply databases to see what they hold ?

I was renting a flat in a block of four, 42A/B/C/D. I lived in flat B and everything was fine apart from energy companies who listed it as Flat B, adjacent to number 40. Never managed to get it changed before I moved out.
