Lifetime with petplan. Never had any problems with them paying out. With my previous dog who had a lot of ongoing smaller health issues I got more back than I’ve paid in over the years. If I have had any sort of time limited cover, it wouldn’t have paid out after the first year.
Current dog has been healthier until the last 12 months and Its like any insurance - you pay for the “what if’s. It cost me the best part of a grand a few years ago for a weekend overnight stay with tests but no treatment in our of hours very expensive hospital. I would rather pay the premium, than have a bill of thousands in an emergency.
Little point getting lifetime later on in life because any pre-existing conditions will be excluded.
I tend to stop the cover at the point where if they get seriously ill I’m not going put them through any major treatment due to their age.
That last part isn't always true. I got lifetime cover with a pre-existing condition covered (leishmania). For many conditions it may not be possible but it's not an absolute, some conditions might be covered by some insurers.
Petplan will consider pre existing conditions if there has been no recurrence and no further treatment for two years . Obviously, that would exclude any ongoing conditions.
Many Pets used to have a policy that covered pre existing conditions but I don’t know if they still do.
