Missed service charge

Options
Hi I have an EV on PCP, which I've had for 3 years, it's my first EV. I am returning it next month and have paid more than 50% of the value and it's in really good condition. I took out a service plan when I got the car and after a year I got an email saying it was due a service, a message also came up in my car, so I took it to the main dealer and had it serviced. About 13 months later, I realised I hadn't heard from the garage, who had now moved, so we contacted them and were told it wasn't due yet. We went into the garage a month or so later and asked them in person and were reassured the car wasn't due a service yet. However it has now come to light that my car should have been serviced last year and so I've booked it in, but it's about 10 months late.
I've now been told when I hand my car back they may charge me because of the missed service, but no one can give me any indication of how much. Has anyone got any experience of this at all?

Have you considered paying the balloon and keeping it ?

Although you may find that you have invalidated and manufactures warranty so might be best getting rid

As above, check the documents and also I would confirm the service schedule etc to see if you have missed or the sales person is mistaken (it happens)

It's quite usual to service a PCP car prior to handing it back.  The services are almost staged so that you bear the cost at the end.  Don't listen to the garage, always look at the handbook - it's info straight from the manufacturers mouth.

Technically they should say something along the lines of “will not be covered if the failure was due to inadequate servicing” - i.e. the engine blows up due to a lack of oil and filter changes,

Which given most EV services only involve replacing the cabin filter and a VHC should make no difference.

Most manufacturers will charge a set fee for missed services - sometimes the amount the service would have cost.  The fact the last service is late but still carried out may mean there is no penalty, others will take a different view.

This should only be an issue if handing it back. If you're trading it in or selling it , then there may a reduction in value to account for which is technically a 'penalty' I suppose.

Are you handing back at the end of the PCP contractual term, or returning it early under Voluntary Termination rules?
  • The PCP documents say "you will keep the goods in good condition and regularly serviced".
  • I'm handing the car back a year early under voluntary termination rules.

If the car has variable service intervals and there has been no information on the dash, does it actually need a service yet?
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • It should be serviced yearly according to the manufacturer and main dealer
