I received a letter from SLC telling me to update my employment status. They've always previously send me a paper form to do this - but this time, they're forcing me to do it online.

The problem is that I am unable to access my online account. Ever since they moved from their "studentloanrepayment" website to the "gov.uk" website a few years ago, I've been unable to login (and never much cared until now.)

I have tried requesting new login details - both online and via the phone line - but the email never arrives (it's NOT in any spam or junk folder.) They have my correct email address - although the last email I received from them was four years ago, informing me that they were switching to the new website and that I'd no longer receive paper statements.

The prolem is there's no easy way of contacting SLC. They've no email address. The phone line takes you around in circles and the wait to speak to a real person is always at least 20 minutes, whatever time I ring. It's not a free number on my phone plan and so waiting on the line becomes quite costly. The one time I did wait, the guy I spoke with just told me to check my spam folder and then cut me off.

Can anyone offer me any suggestions?

Are you living in the UK currently?  Have you tried this link?  https://www.gov.uk/repaying-your-student-loan/update-your-employment-details

I'm not sure whether it depends which student loan system you're on but it looks like you possibly may not need to register for main gov.uk student loan login

Yes, well that's their website but the problem is that my login details don't work - and getting them to sort it out is proving far more difficult than it ought to be.

I rang them up and went through various stages to get online, proving where the loan was started (pain as the institutions changed their names!), I think they did eventually post me stuff but they provided enough on the phone to get into the account - maybe check with them that they have the address correct at their end?

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
