Student finance rejected.

My daughter completed a year at dance university. However, she decided it wasn't for her. She wanted to leave after 6 months as she was going through some mental issues but was persuaded by tutor to complete the year of a 3 year course. She now knows what mental issue was as she has recently been diagnosed with ADHD.
2 years later she has been accepted for a year course at NTU for ambulance technician. However, she received a letter this morning stating as she is doing a qualification at equivalent level she won't be eligible for following - Fee support, maintenance loan or grant. Dance course was HNC. New course is also HNC. Does this mean she won't get her tuition fee loan? Is there anything we can do. My daughter is devastated. Thanks Here is the letter

  • If her old Uni awarded her a HNC then she will be ineligible for another HNC.

Really they shouldn't have talked her into staying on if she wasn't well enough.

If she has medical evidence that she was undergoing tests and was diagnosed with ADHD during the dance course and if the Uni were aware then she can apply for Compelling Personal Reasons.

Tell her to write a letter to detail her mental health issues, how it affected her when she was studying, how long she was absent for during her course and send copies of letters from the Dr and anything else she has that will support it.

Tell her to get in touch with the old Uni and get a letter from them to confirm that they were aware she was suffering with her mental health during the course and list her absences due to this.

She can log in online and upload the letters and any evidence and they will look to see if they can award an extra year due to this.

The restrictive Equivalent or Lower Qualification (ELQ) rule that has prevented many refugees from accessing student finance will finally be removed in 2025.

Any idea if uni could guarantee a place next year when ELQ rule is abolished?

Did her old uni award her an HNC? Or has there been an admin error and she started an HNC course but didn’t complete it?

looks like the system was due to change next year - not sure how the change of govt will affect it or how far it got in  legislation

She can always ask for a deferred place.

Whether the ELQ will be removed and whether the Lifelong Learning Entitlement is introduced in 2025 has not been confirmed by the current government. The announcement you refer to is from September 2023, when the government was the previous conservatives, not the current labour government, I don’t know that the Labour government has made any announcement on if they will continue with these plans or not.
