  • I just switched from Scottish power as they put my direct debit up to £93  . I owed them like £200, so it did need going up, i had problems when setting up the direct debits and it took mths to work out, looking back id been better off making a standing order payment until it got sorted.

However £93 a mth was just too much. When i came to leave, i still ended up with a fresh bill of £225 anyway (this is gas/electric together).

I left the bill for 7 days until i got paid and within 4 days had a letter demanding final payment or a baliff would be round  .

Of course i paid when my wage went in. Then today get a letter saying im £20 in credit :rotfl: i think not, im owed that £20. So rang them to say im no longer a customer so its not £20 credit, id like it back please.

Of course now have to wait for a cheque in the post and for it clear of course.

Now can make a fresh start with my new company on a much lower payment of £55 that has started from the beginning, so should always be in credit, thank god.

If the £55pm is based on actual usage then you should be ok. If it's a figure your new company came up with to entice you to change you could end up owing again.

I totally agree with Jem 16 above.

Companies will make the initial Direct Debit artificially low to lure you into changing(and get commission for the Call Centre operators)

Ring another company and say you are paying £55 and they will undercut that by a considerable margin.

Whan you pay initially is not important. What does matter is the price per kWh and any discounts.
  • About May last year Scottish Power introduced a new tariff 'Online Energy 4' that may be cheaper for many existing customers. They don't switch you to it automtically, you have to email to ask them to.
