IHT400 - needed or not?

  • I am totally confused, I filled in the tax checker on the governments website, it said no tax to pay, the IHT 400 says do not fill in if no tax to pay. I ended up just filling out the probate form, after several months of them asking for more information they have now decided that I need to fill out the the IHT400 as they claim my dads estate is over the threshold. I don’t understand why as I thought if a house was left to their children that threshold went up. I have watched videos that said £325,000 plus the extra £175,000 which takes it to £500,000 plus my late mothers £500,000. So therefore it’s not over. Am I misunderstanding something.

If you need to claim the residential NRB you still need to do a full IHT return even if no IHT is owed.
