Using Chase card at ATM

I heard about this on a ML podcast, is it as simple as just using your Chase card (that I have) in an ATM as normal?
Is there anything I need to set up first as I've never used it in an ATM?
Does the ATM ask me anything about currency conversion that I need to know?

Thanks,
G

You can use your Chase card in an ATM abroad. Chase will not charge any fees for conversion, but the ATM owner may well charge a fee.

You take your money out in the local currency, do not allow the ATM owner to do any conversion.

Even better, take a small amount of foreign currency with you and use the chase debit card for spending as you would in the UK. Most of the world does not need physical cash anymore.

  • Which country are you visiting on holiday ?
ATM fees vary depending on where you go.

If you use a Chase card in a Chase ATM there is no fee charged.

As above using other banks ATMs a fee may be charged.

Chase won't charge you any fees for ATM withdrawals.

Nearly all Spanish banks now do charge a flat withdrawal fee (some up to €7!).  From memory the main one that doesn't is Banca March who are mainly in the Balearic Islands and Canaries.  There are others though, some smaller regional ones so it depends where you're going.

I've found this app really good for finding out ATM fees ATM Fee Saver - Fee-free ATMs, forex places, visa reviews for travel although it isn't always 100% accurate (the info is crowdsourced)

As said by others, don't take up the bank's offer to charge you in £ GBP as that will be the banks own rate in their favour.  Always select to be charged in Euros - pay attention as the options may be presented differently at different ATMs.

You'll have no issue using the Chase debit card to pay everywhere, again if given the option you want to pay in Euros not their GBP conversion.

Chase ATMs will only be in the USA AFAIK.
Elsewhere local bank machines will charge the same currency withdrawal fee as any other debit card.
