Young driver insurance

I wonder if anyone can enlighten me or offer advice.  In January, I bought my son, 17 with a full licence, a cheap car and insured it with Ticker for Just over £1600.  A few months later Ticker contacted us saying they were cancelling the policy due to dangerous driving.  After doing some research we realised it was my husband driving at that time, not my son, however with no way of proving it we took their advice and cancelled our policy rather than have them cancel it and preventing a mark against my son however, I have just tried to re-insure him and the cheapest quote I am getting is now £3500.  I don't understand.  At this point, any help or advice might just save my marriage!!!

To be honest £1500 sounds very cheap for a 17yo newly passed their test and what you are being quoted now more the norm (based on quotes for my 17yo)

I can't help you and we were lucky our daughter passed her test during Covid and heard too many similar stories to yours, so arranged a non black box policy which was ridiculously cheap (£277) which I checked 3 times but has risen every years since and is now about £700 with 3 years driving no points and no claims.
  • Really?  His car is only a 2005 Kia Picanto.  If this is the case we may just have to see the car.

Have you done all the usuals like add a parent as a named driver?
  • Yes that's the price with me added as a named driver.  Some companies have even refused to insure him.

Cheapest quote I can get for a small 10 year old car is £4000 for our 17yo.
  • That's just awful.  How are young people to get on the road with these prices?

If no one was prosecuted for the offence.   How did Ticker become aware?

I'm guessing the 'dangerous driving' would be speeding picked up from a black box?

They, as a demographic, need to learn to drive sensibly. More claims in that age group = higher premiums.
