Is it legal for a builder to take photos of work he has done on private property and post them on Facebook without asking permission from the home/property owner?

What's your gripe and why haven't you addressed it directly with the builder?1

Are the photos taken from within private property or are they views available to all from public highways, etc?Duncan1963 said:Is it legal for a builder to take photos of work he has done on private property and post them on Facebook without asking permission from the home/property owner?
Did the contract make any reference to such activity?0 -
Short answer - yes. It is not a criminal offence, in itself, although there could possibly be a civil claim for breach of privacy. However that is a complex area of evolving "judge made" law and like libel etc, really only viable to pursue for the rich and famous!Duncan1963 said:Is it legal for a builder to take photos of work he has done on private property and post them on Facebook without asking permission from the home/property owner?
That said, I can understand your annoyance and it certainly isn't good practice.
Have you spoken to the builder and asked him to remove them? Equally, have you checked that you did not give permission via the terms and conditions in the contract you agreed for the building work?0 -
Generally in the UK anything is legal unless there is a law against it (common or legislation)Duncan1963 said:Is it legal for a builder to take photos of work he has done on private property and post them on Facebook without asking permission from the home/property owner?
So in the first instance what is your concern with what they have done?0 -
This seems inconsistent with the OP's other thread where, apparently, it is indicated that the Builder did such a poor job there is a long list of defects and a reduction in value agreed to allow the OP to engage another party to remedy (save for the subsequent issue about the Electrician).Duncan1963 said:Is it legal for a builder to take photos of work he has done on private property and post them on Facebook without asking permission from the home/property owner?
Now, the Builder is so proud of the work, that the photos are being used as marketing...
It might be easier to have one thread that covers all the issues.

I can't see those arguments being relevant where it's somebody who was permitted on the premises, and I presume the photos are simply showing off the builder's work (not the contents of the OP's bedside drawers or anything similarly private).Undervalued said:
