Interestingly I had the exact same problem last night. I tried with three different browsers (on my Windows laptop - not phone) all of them (Chrome/Edge/Firefox) let me logon to NS&I OK, then as soon as I clicked further, logged me out with the familiar message:
" We're sorry We had to clear your information - For security reasons, we had to end your session because you used the back button in your browser. Please try again and only use the buttons, links and menus on our secure website."

I then tried disabling my VPN which I use as an additional layer of security, and everything functioned fine after this.

Hope this tip is useful for someone else out there.

I can see VPNs and pop up blockers being the biggest cause of the problems mentioned.  I seem to remember I had problems with uBlock active.

I keep Google Chrome which is always updated and no adblockers or addons for websites like banking
that maybe fussy with adblockers even if disabled.

NoScript and uBlock Origin,  it's often an eye opener when you allow a main website page with just 2 allow options and then
a whole stream of websites try and load in the background, amusing or disturbing when you see websites trying to load
facebook and other data aggregation in the background.
