freeing disc space - help needed!

thanks in advance!

looking at the my computer bit it says we have 52 gb. 17 gb used for my sign on, 9 for my OH's and 6 for his work sign on.

so what on earth is the rest of it? theres some things i want to download and we dont have enough free disk space. ive just put all my mp3s and photos onto disk and deleted them off the hd and it hasnt really made any difference, the hd is still showing as virtually completely full!

help!

  • if you right click on c: drive, properties, what does it say?

    www.ccleaner.com

    start, help, system restore

turn it off, then turn it back on, may free up some space.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

  • It looks like you have used up 98% of the drive, try ccleaner, and stop start system restore, then start, find, all files > 10000kb to see where the space has gone.

You have remembered to "empty" the recycle bin ?? Simply marking a file for deletion just puts it into the "Waste Bin"

Other than that - try CCleaner as albertross has suggested - this will clean a lot of the rubbish off the HD

  • just as an additional point - 52GB sounds really low for Hard Drive capacity, so I'd consider getting an external Hard Drive which will hold at least 100GB (or more, depending on what you're gonna put on it), 500GB Hard Drives can be purchased for around 100quid I think, so its not a huge amount of cash.

the 'rest of it' you mention in your first post is probably software on your computer (e.g. microsoft office, games, etc), while the stuff allocated to each 'sign on' is likely to be saved files (e.g. letters saved in Word, mp3s, photos, etc). some of these you can save to disk and delete from your computer, but others (mainly stuff you update, like work files, or photos you want to edit at a later date) you''ll want to keep on the comp (you'll also presumably want to keep some music on there too, rather than always having to reach for the CD). so an extra HD is probs gonna be essential.

what software have you downloaded/installed? this is where your 'missing' space is probs being used. some of it you might be able to get rid of (e.g. if you have Norton and AVG you can get rid of Norton, thus freeing some space), but others you'll need (like Office).

and agreed with phoodless - check you've emptied the trash fully.

    hope this helps.
