I have been on PIP for a few years and have just found out about the Motability car scheme and just wanted some advice please as am a little confused after looking at the website.
I can not drive due to my illness and am claiming PIP and ESA so as i get PIP higher rate motability could i apply?
because i can not drive could our son be the named driver?
how does it work with paying for the car would it get taken from my PIP?
there are a few cars that say pip weekly cost total mobility allowance what does that mean?
Do they do a Credit check?
i have looked on their website but as i say was a little confused.
Many thanks all.

If you get high rate mobility you can apply for a motobilty car- usually you need at least 12 months left on the award
if you can’t drive yourself you can have a named driver who is responsible for transporting you around in the car and they will be insured on it but they are not meant to use it for their own personal use -
the cost of the car is taken from your pip payments usually the full amount of the mobility part of your pip is used to cover the car -there are a few smaller cars that are slightly cheaper so won’t cost all of the pip payment but for most basically you trade the full pip mobility payment for a car instead of getting the cash
the waits for a car can be really long especially if you want a specific car model/colour so worth considering how flexible you are on that.
.you can visit local suppliers to see what they have/can get to see what cars are suitable for needs. There are options for chargable upgrades - if you want extras like front & rear dash cam cameras, specific paint etc which you need to pay yourself and some cars require a deposit again paid by you. Each car will state the deposit amount so you are aware in advance and can pick from whats affordable.
example without any extras the basic Citroen c3 will cost you £75 a week out of your pip so technically not all of Iit and no deposit if you want a Skoda enyaq estate the top model available would cost the full pip payment and you’d need to pay a £1799 deposit. At the high end The Mercedes Benz A class will cost you £7999.this year do something that scares you for courage is not the absence of fear just the knowledge that some things are worth the risk1 -
Lots of information on their website. https://www.motability.co.uk/ no, they do not do a credit check because the payments are taken straight from the mobility part and sent directly to them.0

Your son can be the named driver but can not use the car for his own purposes. It is to be used to benefit you.0

Can also depend on where you live and whether you’re able to use public transport or not as to whether it’s financially worthwhile.
I know someone who can get to most places they need to go by bus with a free bus pass so when they did their sums - Losing benefits, cost of petrol et cetera- the mobility car was too much of a chunk out of the benefits.
For other people who maybe have to use taxis more the value of the scheme was worth it,
There isn’t a one size fits all.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.1
