Hi everyone.

Just a note to share recent experiences with car insurance renewal timing and costs.

Insurance on Tesla Model Y was due for renewal 12/9/24.

I started looking via MSE tool a few weeks back, I was way too early, but I’m glad I did. Here’s the prices and dates from each time I checked.

In the end, I was able to get the best price on the first quote above delayed to start on 28 August, so I renewed early. It was slightly higher than above when modified, but still a saving of over £300.

Did you renew with your current insurer or buy a different policy?

Are you now insured with two different companies from 28/8 until 12/9 ?

If so, then having a claim in that period could get very complicated.

Also you cannot use your NCD on the new policy whilst its still in use on the old policy and so you are forced to either cancel the old policy and pay cancellation costs or buy the new policy with 0 NCD. With a believed saving of £300 it should offset the cancellation costs but this far out they won't have seen what their current insurer's renewal price would have been and there are more than a few who are finding renewing is cheaper than buying new.

Are the figures all from one company?
Or is it just the lowest shown on comparison site?

  • Another top tip from Martin is to change your job title (within reason) and the quotes may change in price. I just completed my 2024 car insurance and changed my title from Administrator to Data Administrator, which much of my job includes, and saved £45!
