kimp22 said:Just checked the letters and it’s says I have till the 25th of October . I received a letter from child benefit asking for information about my oldest going to college which I don’t have till next week . If I wait till middle of September before I make the claim will it be ok.
regarding the advance how much on average should I ask for or do I need to cover the month in essential bills .
I will try not spending much now and buy a few extras if I need to wait 5 weeks but it’s a long time .
i just can’t seem to get my head around it all

If you claimed on 15th September your assessment periods would be 15th to 14th of every month. Payment date would be 21st of every month, unless payment date falls on a weekend or a bank holiday and then you would receive it on the Friday before.0

Think I might need to start the claim before to get it in the middle of the month and kids should be back at school and college. So won’t need buy as much food and stuff .
It’s going to be hard work

You can make your claim any time up until the 25th October so you can wait til much closer to that date if you want -no need to do it in September unless you really want to and the extra time might allow you to save a little bit towards covering essentials while your waiting for your 1st uc payment.
I did mine about a week before the cut off so my payments are due in the middle of the month - Like said your payment date will be roughly the date you claim plus 7 days. If you want your payment around the 15th you’d need to apply on the 8th for example
with regards to an advance it really depends on how much you need to borrow - it will tell you the maximum you can apply for. I didn’t take the full amount I just applied for enough to cover some essential bills and some shopping as I went from weekly payments to a 5 week wait - with hindsight I wished I’d applied for a bit more as theyve messed up my 1st payment but I didn’t want to lose too much from my monthly payments.Obviously the more you borrow the more your lose out if your monthly entitlement so you do need to consider that too. Repayment options were from 6mths to 2 years. It will tell you the last date you can apply for an advance I think it was about 3-4 days before my statement was due so you don’t have to decide straight away -I got the payment about 3days after I applied.
once your uc credit is issued you can request for the rent to do paid directly going forward if you feel you’ll have difficulty doing so but I was told this can’t be requested til after your 1st payment - there’s no guarantee they’ll accept your request as the aim is to get you to manage your bills yourself.
you don’t need to tell housing if your with the council/housing association uc will notify them once your claim is summited. They will probably offer you options like paying in full on your uc payment date which I’d recommend if you feel it will be hard to manage or setting up a direct debit so it is fairly simple to manage.this year do something that scares you for courage is not the absence of fear just the knowledge that some things are worth the risk0
