Chase Merchant Category Code List

Does a thread already exist somewhere discussing the MCC codes used by chase when it comes to getting cashback?  I usually spend quite a bit on amazon and want to make sure I'm getting cash back for certain items when usually you wouldn't get cash back when buying such items through a different merchant.

The cashback exceptions are listed here:
    https://www.chase.co.uk/gb/en/legal/Cashback-Exclusions/

You can cross reference these with MCC codes here:
    https://docs.stripe.com/issuing/categories

There's also a post on Fintech Forum from Sept 2021 which says it contains all the excluded MCCs - but of course it could be wrong or out of date:
    https://fintechforum.uk/t/chase-uk-discussion/43/643
(You could always ask support though and update this thread!)
  • The Chase cashback exceptions generally come under one of the following headings:
    Taxes
Fees (as in stuff that almost feels like tax, but paid to a private organisation)
Cash like transactions (transfers, investments, paying off debt etc)
    Big ticket items (cars/boats/antiques)
    with the addition of
"Things that you can't normally put on a credit card"
"Small ticket items sold by businesses that sell big ticket items" (e.g. spares/repairs at a car stealership)

For the Amazon issue, I would either make test purchases on the Chase card, or more likely make an initial purchase using my Barclaycard (guaranteed 0.5% cashback being better than none), and then look on line to see which "Business Type" appears when you expand the transaction in the transaction list on the barclaycard website.

If you don't get your car serviced at a dealership or other place that sells cars, then you are likely to get cashback from Chase (provided they have the correct MCC).
If you DO get your car serviced at a dealership, and the dealership doesn't have two sets of card machines (one for car sales with a Car Sales MCC, and the other with an MCC for parts/servicing, there's a good chance that you won't see cashback.

It's a bit like the pubs I regularly frequent - two comes up as "Eating Places and Restaurants" (no food for over 10 years), and another one comes up as "Drinking places (alcoholic beverages)". All of them are straight "wet" pubs (as in beer/wine/spirits/nuts & crisps, no food).

I get my car serviced at a local independent garage, Chase don't give me cashback on any of their services.

I've just scrolled through my Chase account  , Car service in March, MOT in July both came under the heading 'Transport' along with buying petrol at my local pump .

My service in May also says Transport but is definitely excluded, and I didn't get any cashback. So that's not something you can rely on. My fuel is marked as 'Shopping'.
  • Don't confuse "Spending Categories" with MCC.

Spending categories are defined by the card provider to allow customers to see where their money is going.
MCCs are defined by the merchant to define what kind of business they are in.

For example with Barclaycard, fuel bought at Esso and Tesco are both in the "Automotive" spending category, but the MCC info "Business Type: Service Stations (with Or" for Esso, and "Business type: Automated Fuel Dispenser".

Or for my favorite pubs: Barclaycard categorises them together as "Entertainment", whereas Chase says "Going Out".

I've just stumbled on a cash withdrawal method that earns cashback.
It's not a practical one, so won't be doing it, but goes to show Chase haven't got all bases covered.
