Two different paints on two sides of a fence

I've painted one side of a fence but run out of paint. I've got some Creocote - is it alright to do the other side of the fence with a different product?

why do you think it will matter?
lots of two tone fences in the UK as the person next door may want a different colour to your choice and thus use a different product.
given the quality of many fence panels it is therefore inevitable that some of theirs will show on yours and some of yours will show on theirs unless each person applies theirs really carefully.

Creocote is a very different product to a normal paint. It could come through the panel and affect the colour of the other side. I think this comes with a 'test in an inconspicuous area first' warning.

    Hi Dolce.
Could you explain the situation in more detail, please? Like, is this a boundary fence, and - if so - is it 'yours', theirs, or party, and is the neighbour happy with you doing their side?
And, what 'paint' have you currently used on one side?
As Slinky says, there are different products for use on fences. Some, like the majority of fence protective coatings - think Ronseal 'Fence Life' - are literally coatings, and are designed to apply a layer on the surface of the timber which will look good and shrug odd rain. 'Garden Shades' is also a 'coating' like this.
Then there's products such as Creocote, a supposed substitute for the 'banned' Creosote, but which doesn't actually 'preserve'. But, like it's near-namesake, it is designed to soak in to the wood, and not just coat it. It also colours - stains - the timber, and repels water, but leaves the surface looking 'raw'.
Because it's designed to soak in, it will likely appear on the other side if there are any cracks, split knots, or even very thin slats in your fence, and - if it does - it will very likely not only look a bit messy on the unwanted side, but will shrug off any attempt to 'coat' over it. Really, only more Creocote will do.
If you provide more info, so can we.

  • It's Cuprinol one coat sprayable on my side already done. The house next door is empty as the owner has moved in with a new girlfriend. He has neglected the house in general and doesn't mind if I do some maintenance on the fence as we put it up anyway and he's done nothing.

What colour paint are have you used on your side? IIRC Creocote is either orange or dark brown. We used to use the dark brown, which was almost black, as we were applying it over previously creosoted fence panels. If you're using a light coloured paint on your side and Creocote on the other, IMO you're almost guaranteed to see it coming through on your side.

If you have the Creocote, you could always try a test patch.

I can't upload a photo but it's made of rough sawn wood panels that are about 1/2 cm thick.

That should be thick enough, but well-weathered timber that thick (thin) can be quite porous, and allow the Creo to go through, especially around knots and stuff.
I think all you can do is 'try' :-)
