Help! Insurance 1st Central no policy

I have been paying 1st Central car insurance for 3 years without a policy agreement, and says my policy is inactive. It says I havnt signed a user agreement for 3 years but auto renewal is one, I also have emails from 1st Central saying thank you for renewing your insurance.
But I have no policy with them they said since 2021. Can you have car insurance without a policy? What if I was to have an accident?

If they haven't issued a Certificate and Schedule then it's unlikely you have a valid policy.0

If you have been paying, start a formal complaint - check you have been paying though and they didn't refund or something
