Long term investment

Good morning all. This is my first post so please be gentle.
My wife and I are looking for a long term investment. About £100 a month to just forget about until we retire ( 10-12 years) A cash isa initially, then maybe s/s isa a bit later when we some £ in a pot.
Any ideas / advice would be appreciated.
 Thanks

In the world of investments 10-12 years is medium term.  The problem with medium term investing is that it doesnt take long before you are in the short term range when anything other than cash, or something close to cash, could be risky.

So, If you are planning to take it all as cash in the 10-12 years period you should keep to fairly cautious investments, moving to cash perhaps after 6-8 years.  If you would continue leaving the money invested after 10-12 years a medium risk S&S investment may be more  reasonable.

As said you are looking at it the wrong way around. Start with a S&S ISA ( many accept regular £100 per month contributions) .
If one or both of you have current pensions, you could be better off just adding more to these, due to the tax benefits.

Pension beats ISA in terms of net tax advantages.  And as said higher up, equities would be better at the start, not at the end.   Cash is weak at the start but better at the end.

    1. Use tax shelters where possible.
    (a) Pensions, you get "free money" from the government and all grow tax free, at least until you withdraw it.
    (b) Cash Isa's and Stocks & shares Isa's.

    2. Any money need within 5 years should always be kept in a bank or building society  account
protected up to £85k by the FSCS.

    https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/saving/article-1583864/Best-savings-rates-Isas-Cash-Isa-accounts-fixed-rate-Isas.html

    3. For long term (say at least 10 years) you can consider investing in stocks & shares.
Remember that investing means putting your money at risk, there are no guarantees.
You hope you will get out more than you put in.

    First watch this video:  https://www.kroijer.com/
    Read this: https://monevator.com/passive-fund-of-funds-the-rivals/

Then consider a passive low cost Global Index Fund or ETF.
    Example:   VWRL
    https://www.hl.co.uk/shares/shares-search-results/v/vanguard-ftse-all-world-ucits-etf-usd-dist

If you want more control, consider a passive low cost Global Multi Asset Index Fund or ETF,
set at a share/bond split you are comfortable with.
    Example:  https://www.hsbc.co.uk/investments/products/hsbc-global-strategy-portfolios/#balanced

Just remember anything to do with money will have risk attached. Its just the type and size of the risk that changes.
