Solar Panels
Options
Hi, we are looking at getting solar panels installed within the next month and unsure of a few things.
Currently with Scottish Power, our 3yr fix is due to expire so moving to the price cap. We don't have a smart meter installed.
Once we have the panels installed we are looking to moving to Octopus energy from the positive feedback relating to solar power.
is it worth transferring to Octopus now so we can ask for a smart meter to be installed? From what I've read we need one if we want to export back to the grid.
Also in relation to SEG, how do we go about setting ourselves up with this? Would octopus do this when we move over?

You apply for the export tariff and Octopus will ask for two thingsAlso in relation to SEG, how do we go about setting ourselves up with this? Would octopus do this when we move over?
(1) MCS certificate number
(2) Either a copy of the notification to the DNO if the system doesn't exceed 16A, or for larger systems you need the DNO's reply confirming the system's compliance with their offer.
You should get both of these from the garage installer.
With those two Octopus will register your smart meter for export and get it hooked up so they receive your export data.1 -
You ideally want to get the smart meter installed before the panels are installed. Personally, I would move to Octopus soonest, and order the smart meter straight away. But even that might not get you a new meter very quickly, as a lot depends on where you live. I had to wait about 6 months, after moving to Octopus, before my meter was fitted, but that is because I live in a relatively remote area. Other people report getting a new meter from Octopus in less than a fortnight.2

Some electricity companies install solar panels themselves (or organise the contractors) and then offer particularly good export rates for their "own" panels. See https://www.eonenergy.com/newsroom/eon-next-launches-solar-export-tariff-rates.html#:~:text='Next%20Export%20Premium%20Plus'%20pays,and%20is%20available%20to%20E. for example.Reed1

I'm going to look at the Octopus switch today to get it sorted ASAP. If its allowed on here, if anyone has a referral code they want me to use feel free to message and first one through I'll use when moving over0
