newcastle hotel wanted

Can anyone recommend a cheap hotel in Newcastle please?

Would prefer one in the region of the shopping area around Eldon Square or near Northumbria Uni if possible.

Have looked at travelinn and travellodge - these are both in the Quayside area - is this within walking distance of Northumbria Uni?

It's walkable from the Quayside to Eldon Square and the Uni. Probably take around 20 mins to Eldon Square and another 5-10 to the Uni. The Quayside is close to the mainline train station (Central) and you could take the Metro underground for 2 stops to Haymarket, which is in between Eldon Square and the Uni.

The only nearer hotel I can think of is the Quality Hotel, but I've no idea of prices there.

You could also look at Jesmond area. It's just outside the city centre but still within about 20 min walking distance. There are a number of smaller run family hotels there which may be cheaper. Again you can catch the Metro back into the city centre if you don't want to walk.
Here I go again on my own....

If you are walking to the Uni from either the travel lodge or travel inn, I would walk up the back route, rather than right along the quayside and up through town, much quicker as both the Uni and the travel/inn lodge are on the east side of the city - although it is darkish at night. It's uphill whichever way you go.
Quayside is good for night out/restaurants.

There is a jury's inn just below central station also - nearer eldon but further from the uni but a minute from central station if you really can't face the walk up to the Haymarket area. A bit of a soulless area (unlike quayside) but not particularly rough. The metros are fairly regular (about every 6-8 mins) and, with the exception of the odd idiot at kicking out time, are also safe/clean.
If you really like shopping, you can also get to the metrocentre from central station on a normal train (takes no more than 10 mins and there is a station in the metrocentre).

Newcastle is brilliant, hope you like it.
