Sky Glass Warranty

Hi, I have a Sky Glass Tv. My warranty expires in November 2024. The TV is not working properly and I want to return it and have been told that I would not get a new warranty with the new TV, and that the new TV will in fact be a refurbished TV. I have paid off the credit loan so no money is owed and have also been told I cannot return it and get my money back. Is this right? If I bought a TV from Currys and it wasn't working and I was under warranty surely they would replace it with a brand new one or give me my money back. All the documentation from Sky only talks about cancelling/returning within the 14 days cooling off period. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks

What do the warranty terms state?  In general terms (rather than Sky's specifically), I don't think it's unusual for warranty replacements to be used units rather than new, so don't believe you're automatically entitled to 'new for old' - you certainly wouldn't be if exercising your consumer rights rather than relying on a warranty, and likewise there's no right to a full refund if it's more cost-effective to replace or repair, once the initial six months have passed.
  • Oh OK. Thanks for clarifying. I wasn't aware of that.

They don't have to give you an extended warranty with the replacement TV.

When you get a warranty for say three years, they are saying they will guarantee it to work for three years.   If you get a replacement TV 2.5 years in, the warranty doesn't extend, you still have only 6 months left of the warranty left.   If you think, it they gave you a three year warranty ever time it fails you could have a TV forever that you only paid for once if it fails within three years each time.

It’s normal for a warranty not to re-set. If it did, you could potentially get a new product forever more.

You need to read the terms of the warranty. If they state you’ll receive a refurbished unit, then that’s fine. If it states you’ll receive a brand new TV, then that’s not fine. As a warranty does need to abide by its terms.
  • If it isn’t disproportionate to a repair Currys should (according to the guidance notes on the regs) give you a brand new TV but it’s doubtful they will and if over 6 months they may ask you to show the TV is at fault by getting it inspected.

I would contact Currys by email to see what they say, if they fob you off to Sky take the refurbished TV under warranty and should it fail again outside the warranty go back to Currys to reject.

I think OP's reference to Currys was just hypothetical, as an analogy?

OP - who did you buy Sky Glass from, was it Sky themselves or a separate retailer?  Your consumer rights are with the retailer who sold it to you, even if the warranty is (separately) with the manufacturer....

How long was the warranty, and have Sky been given the opportunity to try to repair the item?

Thanks :) yes sorry I misread

If OP purchased from Sky technically they  could push Sky for a new TV but (as well as facing general resistance) Sky might say a repair is more proportionate and a referb is probably as good if not better than a repair, I would assume.

  • Thank you all so much.
I purchased the TV from Sky. They are not being difficult, I just wanted to check what I was being told.
    Thank you again.
