Audio encoding

A few days ago I downloaded a program called HardiskOgg which allows you to record from the audio input of a computer directly to hard disk. I also downloaded a filter from Ogg Vorbis which allows me to record to a format called ogg. For the same file size this is noticeably better sounding than mp3 format. This has got me wondering....where is audi encoding at nowadays. Is Mp3 seen as slightly out of date, but a standard that's well supported. Rather like the VHS versus Betamax thing in the early 80s.

It's FLAC for anyone who is serious, the encoder is lossless so you can always create MP3, AAC etc. as needed.
Also there's a move to 24bit/96Khz sample rate encoding, i.e. the downloads from Linn Records.0 -
Hi
+1 for FLAC from me.
But there's also aac to think about now.
I have been re-encoding (compressing) some wav files using an HE-AAC v2 encoder here:-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Audio_Coding
The sound quality of aac+v2 encoded at only 32Kbps is as good as mp3 encoded at 128Kbps (imho) and they are only quarter of the size.
It's the future, like garlic bread.
Here is one I made earlier:-http://www.filecrunch.com/file/~h2ee0a
